Well here goes nothing. 1 batch down, who knows how many more to go? This afternoon I took maybe a grand total of 30 minutes to prepare Olivia's first batch of baby food. It was so simple and we're all pretty happy with the results. While the book I'm using starts with carrots I skipped to the 2nd recipe and started with sweet potatoes, because really who doesn't love sweet potatoes (also I wasn't too happy with the way the carrot selection was looking today.) I'll switch back to the carrots next week and get back on track to work my way through the book in order. It really is so simple to make and here is somewhat of a step by step on how I got from veggies to puree.
1) wash and peel organic sweet potatoes
2) Chop into 1 inch cube and steam for 15 minutes
(I use a steamer basket and my stock pot, pretty simple and no fancy baby making machines here. *Note - no I'm not hating on the machines, in fact I have my eye on the Baby Brezza but since this is all happening much sooner than expected we are using what we have>)
3) Olivia had been helping from atop her high chair but decided to take a play break while the potatoes steamed and mommy cleaned.
4) Regular blender set to puree - No more margs in this bad boy, at least until I get my Brezza ;) Use the water that was used to steam the potatoes to adjust the consistency to what your baby needs
5) Potion out the puree. 3 went in the freezer for future use and 1 goes into the fridge for dinner then next few nights. I love these containers! They are by Ball, you know the mason jars, anyway they are BPA free and can be frozen.
Once all was said and done I gave it a taste myself and it was so yummy! It reminded me of my days at Texas Roadhouse and the loaded sweet potatoes sans calorie busting caramel sauce and marshmallows.
All in all I'd say our first adventure into purees went very well and as you can tell Olivia was one pleased patron at Cafe Du Mom (NOLA reference anyone??) Like I mentioned, next week we'll be making carrots but only after we return from a fabulous long weekend in Fredericksburg for my baby sister's wedding...better get cracking on my Maid of Honor toast.
